Discipline and the TBR stack

I want to thank everyone who posted or e-mailed suggestion for my reading pleasure. They have been filed for a rainy day.

But I felt I needed to get tough with myself. I went back to my TBR stack, determined to make something work. Damn it, I paid good money for these books.

After much soul-searching, looking at chicken bones and tea leaves, and just generally telling myself to "dive in already," I settled on Old Man's War by John Scalzi. I'm about 50 pages in and feel totally justified by my choice. Holding my attention nicely. I'll report back when I finish.

That's a good one, Vic. John calls it a blatant rip-off of Heinlein, and he doesn't disappoint. The follow up, THE GHOST BRIGADES, is even better.

The local Mr. Paperback just called to tell me the copy of OLD MAN'S WAR I ordered came in today. There's quite a buzz about this guy, but as usual I'm just catching on.

I'm picking up special orders of SUICIDE SQUEEZE and Harry Hunsicker's first novel at another store this weekend.

Dude, your self-discipline is inspiring. I think I'm going to pare down my TBR pile before I buy another book. Well, after I buy Westlake's next Dortmunder book, that is (I don't want to go overboard with this discipline thing).

I liked OLD MAN'S WAR a lot. Haven't read the sequel, and I believe the third book in the trilogy is already out. So many books. So little time.
