Kurt Vonnegut

A sad day for literature. Kurt Vonnegut was my "primary figure" during my doctoral studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. I considered him an influence in my own writing. Certainly his special brand of satire had a big impact.

My favorite: Breakfast of Champions

THE SIRENS OF TITAN was a great book, but I'm really not all that familiar with Vonnegut's work. He was a pretty good short story writer, too. "Harrison Bergeron" was a great one.

All these writers dying. Who's next, Emerson LaSalle?

I always thought of Emerson LaSalle and Kilgore Trout as two peas in a pod.

Breakfast is my favorite, too. I remember reading it in the basement of La Salle University's student union building, awestruck by what you could do in a novel.

I was also impressed when Vonnegut showed up in Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School.
