Chime in with a suggestion please.

Guys, help me out. I'm looking for odd little independent comedy films. No Hollywood formula stuff. Quirky small pictures but still a good laugh. Suggestions?

Depending on what you consider humorous here are a few

Fandango - a very early Kevin Costner film, the jumping from the airplane scene is hysterical.

Night Patrol - Linda Blair and the unknown comic. Blatanly stupid, polictically incorrect, but some of the best play on words you'll find almost anywhere. And fart jokes!

Dave - Kevin Kline as the president.

Amos and Andrew - Nicolas Cage and Samuel Jackson. Haven't seen this in years but as I remember it takes some great shots at racial predjuidice on both sides of the line. Oh, and Dabney Coleman's at his confused best in this.

Of course, everyone's sense of humor is different.

Victor - if you can get hold of it there's a quirky little Scottish comedy film called Gamerz - made on a budget (and it shows!) but excellent. Several of Almodovar's films are black comedies and I really like those. And there's a French film called Diva which is sort of a comedy thriller love story with opera...

DEATH AT A FUNERAL

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0795368/

Funniest things I've seen in a long time and definitely not formulaic

The Price of Milk. Set in New Zealand, lots of weird stuff, romance and truly quirky comedy. The tagline is "A man, a woman and 117 cows."

Down by Law (Jim Jarmusch). If you don't think this is hilarious, there's something seriously wrong with you. Plus, Tom Waits & Roberto Begnini in New Orleans? Please.

Nice suggestion of Down By Law. See it in a double-bill with Leningrad Cowboys Go America (there's a Jarmusch cameo). Failing that, there's always Mystery Train or parts of Coffee and Cigarettes (Waits and Pop; Molina and Coogan). Or there's Idiocracy, if you haven't already seen it.

THE IMPOSTORS: Oliver Platt, Stanley Tucci and a cast of brilliance that reads like a Who's Who of independent films take screwball comedy to the extreme. If you want black comedy with a horror twist--DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE aka "Cemetery Man" - Zombies--Italian style.

Check out Free Enterprise. It's funny, quirky, and loaded with pop-culture references. And William Shatner. Lots of William Shatner.

Back in the early nineties efore the independant film died there were these great quircky indie flims by Hal Hartley. The best ones were TRUST, AMATEUR, HENRY FOOL, and SIMPLE MEN. Another filmaker from that time Greg Araki made a really cool film called THE DOOM GENERATION.

Also, an Australian film called FLIRTING which is an early film of Nicole Kidman. Pretty much all of the Wes Anderson films especially BOTTLE ROCKET, RUSHMORE, and ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Going back to the seventies there is HAROLD AND MAUDE which had a great Cat Stevens soundtrack.

And speaking of Jim Jarmusch films don't forget about GHOST DOG: WAY OF THE SAMURAI. It has Forrest Whitaker as a ghetto samurai taking on the mob.

I'm sure you've already seen REPO MAN.

Here's one I wrote up, not exactly comedy -- Two Hands -- but it's wonderful.

Free Enterprise, I second.

Ever seen LOCAL HERO? NIGHT SHIFT (Keaton)?

Yeah, sorry, I'm lame. Been a while since I've seen something funny and my angst tends to bury it somewhere in my Id or whatever.

I'm going to second John D's suggestion of FREE ENTERPRISE.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ also usually cure what ails me.

And anything by Christopher Guest.

I'm going to have to second Chris R's recommendation of Flirting. Great flick from down under. Which reminds me of another great Aussie flick: He Died With A Felafel In His Hand. Weird title, but a good flick. Quirky in the extreme.

Trailer can be seen here.

The first 10 minutes of the movie here.

Thanks, guys. These are great. Gamerz is a fine choice ... as is anything with Shatner. Some others I need to check out too.

The Last Nudie Musical. A classic.

Second the recommendation for THE IMPOSTORS -- and I'd add FUNNY BONES, also starring Oliver Platt.

Kung Fu Hustle. And I second the Wes Anderson suggestions by Chris R.
