What's next for Gischler? Good question.
In two weeks (give or tale a few days) I will have wrapped the current novel I'm working on, a thriller for Macmillan. I'm working with the same great editor for whom I wrote STAY. It's been awesome.
But ...
I'm looking forward to wrapping it up so I can pivot to the next project. I'm contracted for a comic book thingy, so I'll be working on that obviously, but I need at least one more project and can't decide between a few choices ... all of which I'm excited about. Part of me wants to juggle all of them, but I took my lumps learning a guy can get burned out trying to do too much too fast. And old man Gischler needs his sleep.
Some of these things are "wait and see" projects ... meaning that I'm excited about them creatively, but I'd need to wait and see if they actually turned into anything. For example, I had a nice call with a producer about a week ago, and she suggested I write a TV pilot to show as a sample. I'm keen to try this, but it's not the sort of thing that'll put food on the table ... I mean, maybe down the road, but not immediately. Another filmmaker and I have hatched a plan to come up with an idea that can be shot on an ultra low budget but still look like a "real movie" ... as opposed to something middle school kids shot in the backyard with smartphone cameras. I'm writing a page here and there. I'd love to get on a roll and finish the thing. But again ... a "wait and see" project.
So ... yeah. I want to work those things into my schedule. I'm excited about them. But I also need to pay the mortgage.
Obviously, I need to be working on a novel, and at the moment, the main chunk of my enthusiasm is still for the fantasy genre. Part of me wants the clean slate of a whole new world and cast of characters, and I already have an awesome idea and three chapters. But the Ink Mage books have reached a lot of readers, and I'm equally excited to return to the World of Helva for more adventures. I invested a good bit of creativity thinking up the system for the tattoo magic, and I feel there's more there to be mined.
So. That's what I've been stewing on. I guess I'll know in about 2 weeks what I've decided.
Or think up nine new ideas and try to write them all and explode.

great blog and people should help the writer and contribute as much as they can if they want to read this continuously
Is there a way to figure out what events Mr.Gischler will be attending?
I'll be at Southern Geekfest in Hattiesburg, MS this May!
Great post, I always look for such interesting post and this one certainly have my attention. Thank you for sharing it with us and keep posting such posts..
I have enjoyed the first 2 Inkmage books. I am looking forward to the 3rd one.
To be honest I would love to see you extend the ink mage series. Its the most enjoying read I have had in a long time and I read a lot of fantasy. The books are really well written and the characters well developed and rich.
We definitely need more Rina! After reading all three ink mages, I’m dying to know more about her new life and adventures. Great books, best fantasy series I’ve read in years. Keep up the great work!
Maybe you should start on that sequel to Go Go Girls that you promised 6 years ago and that people gave you $6000 for. Just a thought.
More Sloan!
I don't know what is wrong with Hollywood, any one of your books would make a great movie.
The ink mage book would be a great rpg game .. With tattoo leveling up system, spirit=mana .... Please reach out to Sony, EA ..etc and make it happen.
Please think about adapting ur book to a game
Well, I know how that is being a musician myself. What I want to do versus what actually pay's the bills. Still, in all, your work with the Ink Mage series was right on par with some of the greats of our time, Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, Michaell G Manning, etc., You hear my gums flapping? I wanna read more Ink World! Instead of the Ink Mage World though, think the Ink Mage Universe! Also knowing good people is very hard these days(there are so many who claim to be great, awesome, blah, blah blah)and next thing you know you're up shit creek without a paddle! What works for me is being dangerous, with a sense of "I'll fucking kill you if you fuck me over", type of caution. Hopefully managers these days do more than just sit on their ass in a nice cushy office and type emails all day, sending bribes to this guy, that girl, and a case of scotch to the owner of......... See what I mean. It's all about who you know and what wheels can be greased in a as non-greasable fashion as possible! Sounds confusing yet? Well you know why everyone isn't a rockstar! And why me imparticular is not. I fucking suck at it, cause reading people comes easily to me. So when someones lying to me about my future(pay, promises of stardom, etc. etc. I call them out and tell them to put it in writing. When they say what don't you trust me, I say hell no! I know your lying right this instance! Sounds like I'm a nutter(most likely;) but that sixth sense alwasy works for me, except with my personall love life! Then it totally fails! Like Kryptonite! Or Kinda like M. Night Shamalyn movies, Unbreakable, Mr. Glass, they can call me the People Readers AssShaker!
AssShaker!
Thanks for writing such a good article, I stumbled onto your blog and read a few post. I like your style of writing download instagram stories
I've read A Fire Beneath the Skin and love the series. I am curious what you have released so far as the tattoo's go. I'm trying to create a D&D Character inspired by your books and have immense curiosity!
Victor,
Thought of your work just now, dropped by to tell you The Pistol Poets is one of my favorite books. I worked at a bookstore when I saw it on the shelf back in the day, picked it up and read a few pages, tucked it in my jacket and walked out (they weren't paying me very much). It was an awful job - also my first - and finding your novel was basically the only high point.
I like some of your other stuff, especially from around that time, but there's just nothing else like that book anywhere. Thanks for writing it; I've come back to it once or twice over the years, and each time I was sorry to see the back of the last page.
Cheers
